Looking back at the first face-to-face transnational partner meeting of the BENEFIT project in Prague

Mindfulness and resilience among youth in European countries

On the 1st of June 2023, an international meeting of BENEFIT partners took place in Prague. Co-funded by Erasmus+ European funds, the project aims to promote mindfulness and mental resilience in young people. Youth mental health experts from five European countries: the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Germany, Ireland and Portugal met to discuss cooperation on the project, which is now underway. During the project you can look forward to training and workshops for young people and youth workers in all partner countries. The result will be an online e-learning platform to be launched in November 2024.

Understanding resilience, its connection to stress and how to cultivate it

In the EU-project BENEFIT, resources are built for strengthening mindfulness and resilience in the European youth. One of the first questions that arise is: what is resilience? It can seem quite intangible. Resilience means having a good ability to deal with stress. Chronic stress is common in today’s society and can be detrimental to your health. Everyone can build a more resilient mind and body trough working on resilience aspects such as tending to basic personal needs, properly deal with emotions, having social support and a hopeful and optimistic outlook.

Mindfulness meditation reduces avoidance of receiving information that might cause worry or regret

Health, stress, sadness, productivity, and generosity are just a few of the significant outcomes that mindfulness meditation has shown to affect. A European study revealed an effect of mindfulness that has never been studied before: information avoidance. The study discovered that a relatively brief mindfulness intervention can promote a decrease in information avoidance, which is the practice of avoiding knowledge that might make one feel anxious or regretful.

    What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness, or sampajañña in Pali–one of the major languages of the Buddhist scriptures–means clear comprehension. Its definition aligns with its purpose, to help us see more clearly, respond more effectively to what life throws at us, and ultimately make wiser choices (Shapiro, 2020).
While mindfulness has its origins in ancient Chinese medicine, in recent years, it has been widely integrated into modern western therapies for treating a broad range of psychological and physiological conditions (Tang, 2018).

The Incredible Power of Youth Resilience

Youth resilience is a remarkable quality that enables young individuals to overcome adversity and thrive in the face of challenges. This innate strength, coupled with access to resources and support, plays a crucial role in shaping their future and creating a positive impact on society.
